Who makes it?

Since 1993, Château du Caillau has been a jewel in the portfolio of the Bernède family, a name synonymous with the viticultural history of the Lot Valley since the 19th century. Located in the charming village of Vire-sur-Lot, the estate is currently managed by sixth-generation winemaker Philippe Bernède, a visionary who balances traditional heritage with modern innovation. As one of the few families to have shaped the Cahors AOC for over a hundred years, the Bernèdes have helped elevate the region's "black wine"—a nickname coined by the English in the Middle Ages—to the world-class status it enjoys today.

How is it made?

The unique character of Château du Caillau is rooted in its 10 hectares of south-west facing terraces, where the vines benefit from a sheltered position and the heat-retaining river pebbles that give the "Caillau" its name. The vineyard thrives on a complex soil profile of clay, gravel, and limestone, with vines averaging 25 years of age. To ensure the highest quality, Philippe Bernède employs low-yield harvesting and ecological practices, vinifying each plot in separate tanks to preserve the specific nuances of the terroir. The resulting Malbec is aged for 12 months in a combination of stainless steel and oak, a process that expertly softens the naturally wild character of the region's grapes into a sophisticated, modern red wine.

What does it taste like?

This Cahors Malbec is a masterclass in balance, offering a dense and inviting profile packed with intense flavors of black fruit, juicy cherry, and cassis. On the palate, the fruit is complemented by a subtle, sophisticated smoky nuance that adds depth to every sip. While the tannins are firm and ripe—providing the exceptional structure and longevity expected from a top-tier producer—the finish remains smooth and refined. Whether enjoyed now for its vibrant fruit or cellared to develop further complexity, this wine is a robust representation of the rich, dark, and elegant style that defines the Lot Valley.
