Who makes it?

The story of Château Margaux is a grand saga that dates back to the 12th century, originally known as "La Mothe de Margaux." While it began as a fortified mound in the flat Médoc landscape, it was the visionary Lestonnac family in the late 1500s who restructured the estate to prioritize viticulture over cereal farming. Over the centuries, the estate’s renown crossed oceans, earning the admiration of historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, who declared it the finest bottle in Bordeaux. After surviving the upheaval of the French Revolution and various ownerships—including the construction of the iconic, Parthenon-inspired villa by the Marquis de la Colonilla—the estate was revitalized in 1977 by André Mentzelopoulos. Today, under the dedicated stewardship of his daughter, Corinne Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux remains a global symbol of winemaking excellence and historical prestige.

How is it made?

The excellence of Château Margaux is rooted in its exceptional terroir, where gravelly slopes provide the natural drainage essential for producing world-class fruit. The vineyard team employs a rigorous selection process, often discarding a significant portion of the harvest to ensure only the most concentrated grapes make the final cut. The 2009 vintage, for instance, benefited from a remarkably dry growing season and cool nights, conditions that allowed the tannins and anthocyanins to reach peak concentration. Modern vinification techniques, many pioneered at this very estate centuries ago, involve separate fermentations for different varieties and plots. By meticulously balancing the robust Cabernet Sauvignon with elegant Merlot and Petit Verdot, the estate continues to honor its unique land while pushing the boundaries of viticultural innovation.

What does it taste like?

The Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 2009 is a stunning example of a vintage where raw power is refined into pure silk. Composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, this wine boasts a tannic structure even more formidable than the legendary 2005, yet it maintains a surprising softness and delicacy on the palate. At 13.4% alcohol, it retains a classic freshness that balances its immense concentration. On the nose and palate, expect a harmonious blend of dark fruit and refined complexity, leading to a finish of incredible length. While its charm and approachability make it delicious to enjoy now, its "awesome" potential suggests it will evolve beautifully for decades to come.
