Who makes it?

The story of Château Montrose is a testament to the vision of three dedicated families who transformed a forgotten patch of heathland into one of the world’s most prestigious wine estates. Founded in 1815 by Etienne Théodore Dumoulin, the estate achieved the remarkable feat of being classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification when the vineyard was only 40 years old. This legacy of innovation continued under Mathieu Dollfus, who modernized the winery and famously saved the vines from phylloxera using a historic wind turbine that remains a symbol of the estate today. For over a century, the Charmolüe family further solidified its reputation, steering the Saint-Estèphe icon through global challenges while consistently producing legendary vintages that define the pinnacle of Médoc winemaking.

How is it made?

Maintaining its historical 95-hectare footprint, Château Montrose benefits from a unique terroir that allows for the production of exceptionally structured and long-lived wines. The 2019 vintage represents a milestone in the estate's evolution, highlighting a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and "green" cultivation practices. To ensure the highest quality, the harvest is conducted on a rigorous plot-by-plot basis, ensuring that each micro-terroir is respected. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, a process that polishes the tannins and integrates the complex flavors. This meticulous selection process means that only the finest 35% to 40% of the total harvest is chosen for the estate’s premium Grand Cru Classé.

What does it taste like?

The Château Montrose 2019 is already being hailed as one of the greatest vintages in the estate’s long history, drawing comparisons to the legendary 2009. A classic Saint-Estèphe blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, this wine offers a masterclass in precision and concentration. On the palate, it reveals a powerful structure characterized by beautifully ripe, silky tannins and the refined elegance expected of a world-class Grand Cru. While currently displaying a vibrant intensity, this vintage possesses incredible aging potential and will develop a delicate, complex bouquet over time. It is a profound expression of the vintage, balancing power with the signature freshness and longevity that makes Montrose a favorite among collectors.
