Fast forward through an 8th-century monk named Emilion moving into the neighborhood, a 17th-century port clerk taking the reins, and a pre-Revolutionary owner who wisely decided to plant grapes because nothing else would grow in the stubborn soil. By 1874, Bordeaux’s wine bible officially declared it a "First Growth." After playing musical chairs with various prestigious owners—including the Onclin family who polished this hidden gem into a modern jewel, and the Lefevere family who couldn't resist its charms—this historic estate remains perched majestically on the limestone plateau, proving that some things truly do get better with a millennium or two of practice.

How is it made?

Crafting a legendary Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé requires a mix of obsessive garden-tending and pure geological luck. Nestled right in the heart of the famed Asteria limestone plateau, the vineyard’s 7-hectare single block gets the absolute best of both worlds: a sandy-silty western slope and a clay-rich eastern edge, giving it a fancy soil gradient that neighbors elite estates like Clos Fourtet and Pavie Macquin. The Château Villemaurine 2016 vintage is a classic right-bank blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, harvested from vines averaging a mature 35 years old. Hand-picked with dramatic care into small crates and pampered via gravity-flow transfers into double-walled stainless steel vats, the wine was then aged in a luxurious regime of 80% new French oak barrels. No herbicides, plenty of winter cover crops, and a total refusal to cut corners means these roots drink perfectly, whether it’s a drought or a downpour.
