Who makes it?

Château Cos d’Estournel's legacy began with Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, who recognized and tirelessly pursued the acquisition of the finest plots on the hill of Cos. His conviction in the potential of these vines laid the foundation for the esteemed estate that stands today. This historical dedication to securing prime terroir is central to the identity and quality of the wines produced.
How is it made?

The vineyard spans 100 hectares, meticulously planted with a mosaic of varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the dominant part, accounting for two-thirds of the area, complemented by a significant proportion of Merlot and smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdelho. The estate is home to vines with an average age of 45 years, including some venerable specimens dating back to the early 20th century. These older vines, drawing nourishment from the deepest soil layers, contribute significant depth and structure. The Grand Vin of Cos d’Estournel is crafted by blending grapes from these mature plants with fruit from younger vines, with the average age of vines contributing to the first wine being 55 years, highlighting a commitment to complexity and heritage in the winemaking process.
