Who makes it?

Bellevue Wine Estate is a family-owned winery located in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, with a history that dates back to 1861. The Morkel family, originally from Germany, has overseen the estate for generations. The legacy began with Philip Morkel, who settled in South Africa, and was transformed by his grandson, PK Morkel, who shifted the focus from livestock farming to winemaking. Today, the estate is led by Dirkie Morkel, who has incorporated modern winemaking facilities while upholding the family's traditions.

How is it made?

The winery cultivates its grapes using eco-friendly practices in some of South Africa's oldest vineyards. The wine is crafted from carefully selected parcels of Pinotage, the country's national heritage grape, from older vineyard blocks. The grapes were cold-soaked for four days before fermentation in tanks, with three daily aerated pump-overs. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation in 300-liter French oak barrels, split evenly between new and second-fill, and was matured for 22 months.

What does it taste like?

This wine is a rich and powerful expression of Pinotage. On the nose, it offers a perfume of violet and cedarwood. The palate presents bold, concentrated flavors of sweet-sour raspberry and maraschino cherry, complemented by a savory umami undertone. The wine is supported by dense, fine-grained tannins that lead to a clean, lingering finish. The winemaker recommends pairing it with seriously well-aged red meat or the finest stinky cheeses.
