Who makes it?

The story of Domaine Berthier reads a bit like a classic sitcom script: two brothers travel the world, realize nowhere else has better dirt than home, and return to make spectacular French wine. Founded in the legendary soils of Sancerre during the 1980s, the estate later expanded by snapping up the coveted Domaine de Montbenoit in the Coteaux du Giennois. Today, the next generation is running the show with a delightfully modern twist. Clément, fresh off a stint as a cellar master in the USA, handles the vinification and sales with precise expertise, while Florian brings New Zealand and Burgundy flair to his role as lord of the vineyards. Together, they bridge time-honored French tradition with cutting-edge global innovation, ensuring every bottle from their Ste-Gemme-en-Sancerrois estate is a certified crowd-pleaser.

How is it made?

To create this exceptional Domaine Berthier Pouilly-Fumé, the brothers harness the pure expression of 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in the world-renowned terroirs of the Loire Valley. The winemaking process is a masterclass in gentle restraint. After a delicate pressing, the pristine juice is settled before kicking off a completely natural alcoholic fermentation under strict temperature control. But the real magic happens during the aging process, where the wine rests comfortably on its fine lees for 9 to 12 months. This extended maturation imparts a luxurious texture and structural complexity that elevates the classic crispness of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc into something truly unforgettable.

What does it taste like?

Pour a glass and prepare for an aromatic awakening. This Pouilly-Fumé opens with a vibrant, show-stopping nose of elegant white flowers and crisp, green vegetable notes that practically beg you to take a sip. On the palate, the initial attack is wonderfully forthright and lively, hitting you with a burst of bright, mouth-watering acidity. Yet, beneath that initial zest lies a beautiful delicacy and a persistent, refreshing finish. It is best served chilled at 8–10°C, and while it will happily cellar for 2 to 5 years, it is entirely too delicious not to open immediately. Pair it with raw summer vegetables, a rich braised ham, or simply enjoy it as the ultimate luxury aperitif.
