Who makes it?

The story of Domaine Berthier reads a bit like a classic sitcom script: brilliant patriarch Jean-Marie Berthier founds a premium Loire Valley wine estate in the early 1980s, only for his two adventurous sons to travel the globe and return with a suitcase full of new ideas. After collecting winemaking frequent flyer miles in Burgundy, New Zealand, and the USA, brothers Clément and Florian have officially taken the reins. Clément leverages his American cellar master expertise to handle the vinification and sales, while Florian channels his Kiwi and Burgundian roots into dominating the vineyards. Together, they have expanded the estate—including the brilliant 1998 acquisition of Domaine de Montbenoit—bringing a brilliantly modern, precise approach to historical French terroir.

How is it made?

Hailing from the hidden gem appellation of Côteaux du Giennois—a tiny, 191-hectare region with winemaking roots dating back to the 2nd century—the Domaine Berthier Terre de Silex is a masterclass in unique terroir. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grown specifically in the town of Saint Père, these vines dig deep into ancient clay soils packed with Cretaceous-period flint (known locally as Silex). The winemakers capture this incredible geological history by fermenting the juice in temperature-controlled vats to lock in maximum freshness. To give the wine its signature premium texture, it is aged on its fine lees for several months before bottling, adding a luxurious weight and complexity that easily rivals its high-priced neighbors in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé.

What does it taste like?

Pour a glass of Terre de Silex and prepare for an aromatic awakening. This spectacular French white wine bursts to life with an energetic bouquet of vibrant lemon, fresh nettle, tangerine, and crisp green herbs. Because the vines are basically grown in a flint factory, the nose is shot through with an unmistakable, sophisticated smoky mineral note that rolls right onto the palate. It is focused, intensely lively, and delivers an outstanding length that refuses to quit. This is a fruit-driven, flinty Sauvignon Blanc that pairs magnificently with everything from fresh seafood to goat cheese, offering high-end luxury taste without the high-end price tag.
