Is it a marketing myth that Bushmills is the oldest working distillery in Ireland or is it a fact? What is for ure is that the first official license for Bushmills was granted in 1784... not 1608. But who can tell how long distilling had been common here at Bushmills without official permission?
Triple distillation is the open secret of Bushmills Distillery that makes its Whiskey unique and smooth. After Midleton Distillery Bushmills is the second biggest Irish distillery with an annual production capacity of 4.5 mio liters and stills are running seven days a week. After Jameson and Tullamore Dew Bushmills is worldwide the most famous and demanded Irish Whiskey.
Production
The 2012 Pomerol Cask is a limited rare cask finished, cask strength (54.2% ABV) and non-chill-filtered Irish single malt that’s been distilled, matured, finished and bottled at the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery.
Just a stone’s throw from the distillery, the Giant’s Causeway has inspired us for centuries. Its extraordinary hexagonal columns form a series of steps, much like the expressions in this Collection. This 2012 single malt is a bold new footstep for Bushmills, one that not only honours the giants and generations before us but also the incomparable natural landscape in which it’s forged.
After maturing for over six years in oloroso sherry butts and bourbon barrels, Alex Thomas, our Master Blender, finished this exquisite whiskey in rare Pomerol wine casks
Tasting Note
The smallest of all the major Bordeaux wine appellations, Pomerol is home to some of the most expensive and sought-after red wines in the world, delivering intense but refined aromas of ripe wild dark berries. And where others might recask their whiskey for just six months or so, we’ve added deeper waves of flavour by maturing ours in these Pomerol casks for a further four years.
The result is a single malt that is warm and mellow, with notes of ginger, but also with fresher flavours of crisp green apple and lemon zest. It’s a sensational whiskey that stands with the best of Irish single malt, a giant in its own right.
