Who makes it?

High-end California wine history began a bold new chapter in 1975 when legendary American wine pioneer Josh Jensen looked at a remote, windswept peak in the Gavilan Mountains and thought, "Yes, I shall plant luxury Pinot Noir here." Founding Calera (the Spanish word for "lime kiln"), Jensen discovered that the low-yielding, limestone-rich soils and cool, arid climate of Mt. Harlan were absolute magic for finicky grapes. Today, Calera stands as a revered beacon of Central Coast winemaking, famous for its iconic seven-level gravity-flow winery and an uncompromising dedication to producing singular estate wines of uncommon purity, elegance, and serious aging potential.

How is it made?

The Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir 2023 is a masterclass in patient viticulture and premium West Coast winemaking. Sourced from a curated selection of top vineyards across California’s majestic Central Coast appellation—spanning the prestigious terroirs of San Benito County, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Monterey County—this 100% Pinot Noir benefit-rich vintage emerged from a historically long, wet winter and a blissfully cool summer. This extra month of lazy sunbathing on the vine allowed the premium fruit to achieve exceptional ripeness, balancing bright natural acidity with rich flavor concentration. Winemaker Mike Waller then gently aged the liquid luxury for 10 months in 100% French oak (10% new, 90% neutral), adding sophisticated structure without masking the vibrant Central Coast terroir.

What does it taste like?

On the palate, this expressive California red wine delivers a luxurious sensory experience that is far more elegant than your average Friday night pour. It captivates the nose with highly aromatic notes of dark raspberry, warm sandalwood, and aromatic clove. Take a sip, and the vibrant fruit flavor profile unfolds in silky layers of juicy blackcurrant and ripe cherry, gliding seamlessly over a backdrop of remarkably supple, fine-grained tannins. Subtle hints of baking spice add rich complexity and depth, culminating in a long, polished, and beautifully balanced finish that will have you immediately reaching for a second glass.
