Who makes it?

Long before the Central Coast was a darling of the wine world, legendary vintner Josh Jensen looked at a remote, windswept limestone ridge in the Gabilan Mountains and thought, "Yes, I'll plant notoriously finicky grapes right there." Founded in 1975, Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) became a pioneer of premium California Pinot Noir. Jensen chased the holy grail of Burgundian limestone soils, establishing six revered estate vineyards on the rugged slopes of Mt. Harlan. Today, under the watchful, genius eye of Winemaker Mike Waller, this iconic gravity-flow winery continues to craft some of the most sought-after, collectable New World wines on the market. It turns out that isolation, extreme altitude, and a stubborn refusal to do things the easy way make for legendary storytelling—and even better wine.

How is it made?

Perched 2,200 feet above the Monterey Bay, the de Villiers Vineyard is one of the highest, coolest, and most dramatic vineyard sites in California. The 2021 vintage threw a bit of a dramatic tantrum, offering almost zero winter rain and tiny yields, but nature compensated by giving those precious few grapes unparalleled depth and concentration. Crafted from 100% estate Pinot Noir utilizing the signature whole-cluster fermentation method and wild indigenous yeasts, this wine underwent a lavish 18-month slumber in French oak barrels (30% new, 70% neutral). The result of this low-yielding, high-altitude limestone terroir is an elegant, structured masterpiece boasting a perfectly balanced 14.5% ABV and a vibrant acidity that ensures beautiful aging potential for serious collectors.

What does it taste like?

This gracefully luxurious Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir hits the glass with a broodily dark-fruited confidence. The aroma immediately pulls you in with a seductive mix of ripe blackberry, wild briar patch, sophisticated soft leather, and warm allspice. Take a sip, and the palate explodes with juicy bursts of blueberry and black raspberry, all held together by tannins so velvety they should be outlawed. Just when you think the ride is over, hints of nutmeg and cracked black pepper emerge on a finish that lingers longer than an unwanted dinner guest. It’s rich, complex, and unapologetically bold.
