Who makes it?

Founded in 1835 in the sun-drenched region of Tramagal, Casal da Coelheira is a historic estate where the roots run as deep as the vines. While the property has been around since the 19th century, the modern magic began in 1986 when José and Xinanda Rodrigues took the reins, eventually enlisting their son Nuno to transform the farm into a premier Portuguese winery. Spanning 300 hectares along the south bank of the Tagus River, the estate is a thriving ecosystem where pine forests and arable crops coexist with the vineyards. The name itself, "Coelheira," pays homage to the abundant wild rabbits that call this diverse landscape home—though we promise the only thing hopping after a glass of this red will be your taste buds.

How is it made?

To create the Private Collection Alicante Bouschet, winemakers Margarida and Nuno Falcão Rodrigues treat their Tejo terroir like a high-end laboratory. Grown in specialized sandy soils on the south bank of the Tagus River, these Alicante Bouschet grapes are hand-selected for their intensity and grit. The winemaking process is a masterclass in "old meets new," utilizing controlled-temperature mechanical lagares for fermentation followed by a sophisticated stint in both French and American oak barrels. This careful maturation rounds out the wine's bold personality, resulting in a sustainable, high-alcohol powerhouse that’s as technically precise as the Agro-Industrial Engineering degrees backing it.

What does it taste like?

Pours of this Private Collection reveal a color so dark and deep it makes a moonless night look bright. The nose is immediately hit with a wave of ripe forest fruits, artfully entangled with sophisticated notes of toasted oak. On the palate, this is a full-bodied red wine that doesn’t just show up; it makes an entrance. Expect delicate, velvety tannins that provide structure without the sandpaper finish, leading into a lingering aftertaste that sticks around longer than an uninvited wedding guest. It’s the ultimate companion for a charred ribeye or a spicy barbecue—essentially, if it’s cooked over fire, this wine wants to be there.
