Who makes it?

Founded in 1835 in the sun-drenched region of Tramagal, Casal da Coelheira is a historic estate where the roots run as deep as the vines. While the property has been around since the 19th century, the modern magic began in 1986 when José and Xinanda Rodrigues took the reins, eventually enlisting their son Nuno to transform the farm into a premier Portuguese winery. Spanning 300 hectares along the south bank of the Tagus River, the estate is a thriving ecosystem where pine forests and arable crops coexist with the vineyards. The name itself, "Coelheira," pays homage to the abundant wild rabbits that call this diverse landscape home—though we promise the only thing hopping after a glass of this red will be your taste buds.

How is it made?

To create the Casal da Coelheira Private Collection Blend, winemakers Margarida and Nuno Falcão Rodrigues lean into their agro-industrial expertise and the unique terroir of the Tejo region. This high-end red is a sophisticated marriage of Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet, grown in well-drained sandy soils that force the vines to work for their greatness. After a precise destemming and fermentation in temperature-controlled mechanical lagares, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to smooth out the edges. It is then meticulously aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, resulting in a robust 14.5% ABV structure that is built to last until 2036—if you have the willpower to wait that long.

What does it taste like?

In the glass, the Private Collection reveals a deep, brooding red hue that hints at the intensity within. The nose is a walk through a wild forest, bursting with rich notes of cassis, black cherry, and dark forest fruits, all elegantly wrapped in a subtle, spicy vanilla embrace from its time in the barrel. On the palate, it’s surprisingly fresh; a vibrant acidity cuts through a powerful, muscular structure. It’s a wine that demands a seat at the table with a prime cut of red meat or a decadent aged cheese. Sophisticated enough for a cellar, yet bold enough to steal the show at Sunday dinner, this blend is the definition of "drinking well."
