Who makes it?

Founded in 1835 in the sun-drenched region of Tramagal, Casal da Coelheira is a historic estate where the roots run as deep as the vines. While the property has been around since the 19th century, the modern magic began in 1986 when José and Xinanda Rodrigues took the reins, eventually enlisting their son Nuno to transform the farm into a premier Portuguese winery. Spanning 300 hectares along the south bank of the Tagus River, the estate is a thriving ecosystem where pine forests and arable crops coexist with the vineyards. The name itself, "Coelheira," pays homage to the abundant wild rabbits that call this diverse landscape home—though we promise the only thing hopping after a glass of this red will be your taste buds.

How is it made?

When your winemakers, Margarida and Nuno, hold degrees in Agro-Industrial Engineering, you know the science of the "sip" is in good hands. The Casal da Coelheira Reserva is a masterclass in the Tejo wine region’s potential, born from sandy soils that force the vines to work harder than a barista on a Monday morning. This robust blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes a high-tech makeover in mechanical "lagares" with precise temperature control. After a sophisticated malolactic fermentation, the wine is tucked away in French and American oak barrels to mature, gaining complexity and a certain je ne sais quoi that only wood and time can provide.

What does it taste like?

Boasting a deep, dark hue that would make a goth envious, this Reserva opens with a complex aromatic profile. Expect a flirtatious dance between ripe dark fruits and sophisticated notes of smoke and spice—the sensory equivalent of a leather-bound library filled with blackberry jam. On the palate, it’s a powerhouse. It delivers a full-bodied punch of fruit clarity balanced by smooth, creamy vanilla notes from its oak upbringing. While the tannins are firm enough to stand up to a juicy ribeye or a pungent aged cheese, they’ve been tamed just enough to be approachable right now. It’s a "drink now" kind of wine that has enough structural integrity to age gracefully until 2030 if you actually have the patience to leave it in the cellar.
