Who makes it?

Founded in 1835 in the sun-drenched region of Tramagal, Casal da Coelheira is a historic estate where the roots run as deep as the vines. While the property has been around since the 19th century, the modern magic began in 1986 when José and Xinanda Rodrigues took the reins, eventually enlisting their son Nuno to transform the farm into a premier Portuguese winery. Spanning 300 hectares along the south bank of the Tagus River, the estate is a thriving ecosystem where pine forests and arable crops coexist with the vineyards. The name itself, "Coelheira," pays homage to the abundant wild rabbits that call this diverse landscape home—though we promise the only thing hopping after a glass of this red will be your taste buds.

How is it made?

When it comes to the Casal da Coelheira Red, winemakers Margarida and Nuno Falcão Rodrigues bring some serious academic muscle to the cellar. This blend is a "who’s who" of Portuguese royalty, featuring Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, and Touriga Franca grown in unique sandy soils. The process is a meticulous dance of destemming, crushing, and temperature-controlled fermentation. To add that signature high-end polish, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is partially matured in American oak. The result is a sophisticated red that respects its roots while utilizing cutting-edge oenology to ensure every bottle captures the authentic identity of the Tagus riverbanks

What does it taste like?

Pour a glass and prepare for a visual treat: this wine boasts an intense, brooding red color that hints at the power within. On the nose, it’s remarkably youthful, bursting with bold black fruits like blackberries and plums, all tied together with a subtle, sophisticated ribbon of toasted wood. Take a sip, and you'll find a palate defined by ripe, elegant tannins and a concentrated body that feels like a silk scarf for your tongue. It’s balanced, polished, and ready to party with a prime cut of red meat or a sharp aged cheese. Whether you drink it tonight or cellar it through 2030, this red is a masterclass in Portuguese elegance.
