Who makes it?

The story of Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the most storied in the Margaux appellation, dating back to the 18th century. The estate gained prominence under the stewardship of Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, a visionary famously dubbed the "Napoléon des Vignes" for his devotion to the vine. His efforts were immortalized in the 1855 classification, where the estate was rightfully honored as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé). Today, the property is managed by the legendary Lurton family, a winemaking dynasty that has spent generations balancing deep-rooted Bordeaux traditions with modern viticultural insights to maintain its prestigious standing.

How is it made?

Spanning 75 hectares in the heart of the Médoc, the vineyard’s success is rooted in its exceptional clay-gravel soils. These unique grounds offer superb drainage and water retention, which proved vital during the superb but dry summer of 2018. To produce this vintage, the team employed a meticulous, natural strategy to protect the vines, which consist primarily of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, rounded out by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After a precise harvest, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, using 70% new wood to integrate structure and complexity into the final blend.

What does it taste like?

The Château Brane-Cantenac 2018 displays a deep, dark hue with vibrant purplish reflections, signaling its concentration and youth. On the nose, it is remarkably intense, harmoniously blending oaky and spicy notes with a complex bouquet of fruit and florals that evolves beautifully in the glass. The palate offers a large attack and a dense mid-palate, characterized by a natural sweetness and a "chewy," concentrated texture. Balanced by silky, coated tannins and a refined grain, this wine epitomizes the elegance of Margaux. With its impeccable structure and freshness, this is undoubtedly a Brane-Cantenac built for long-term cellar aging.
