Who makes it?

The story of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a rich tapestry of history that began with a prestigious union during the Age of Enlightenment. In 1720, the squire Jacques de Bergeron married Marie Dejean, the heiress of the vineyard, marking the start of a journey that would see the estate rise to international prominence. Under the later stewardship of Bertrand Ducru, who acquired the property in 1797, the estate underwent transformative investments in its cellars and vineyards. Ducru’s dedication was so profound that his name was permanently added to the estate, and his influence eventually led to its consecration as a Second Growth (2ème Cru Classé) in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Throughout the centuries, from the aristocratic Ravez family to the innovative Johnston family—who helped develop the "Bordeaux mixture" to save French viticulture—the estate has remained a symbol of luxury and resilience, eventually coming under the expert care of the Borie family in 1942.

How is it made?

Located in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, the vineyards of Ducru-Beaucaillou are situated on a unique terroir overlooking the Gironde estuary, which provides a microclimate essential for ripening high-quality fruit. The production of the 2019 vintage reflects a commitment to technical precision and respect for the land, utilizing a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The wine is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels, a process that imparts structural complexity while polishing the wine's natural intensity. This rigorous approach in both the vineyard and the cellar has solidified Ducru-Beaucaillou’s reputation as a "super second," consistently producing wines that rival the five First Growths of Bordeaux in both quality and prestige.

What does it taste like?

The Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2019 is a masterpiece of concentration and elegance, presenting a deep garnet-purple hue with striking inky depths. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of cassis, black cherries, and blueberries, interwoven with delicate notes of violet, cedar, and dark chocolate. The palate is impressively full-bodied, characterized by a vibrant backbone of acidity and incredibly fine-grained, "cashmere-textured" tannins. A long, fragrant finish reveals sophisticated layers of crushed stone and fresh mint. While this vintage possesses an extraordinary aging potential of 50 years or more, it is recommended for enjoyment starting from 2028-2030, making it a definitive cornerstone for any serious wine cellar.
