Who makes it?

With a heritage stretching back to the 14th century, Château Durfort-Vivens stands as a pillar of the Médoc’s prestigious winemaking history. Originally a hunting lodge for the influential Durfort de Duras family, the estate evolved into a vineyard of distinction by the 17th century. Its reputation for quality was solidified early on, earning it a status equivalent to a Second Growth as far back as 1745—a ranking formally confirmed in the historic 1855 Classification. After passing through the hands of Scottish wine merchants and the owners of Château Margaux, the property was acquired in 1961 by the visionary Lucien Lurton. Today, his son Gonzague Lurton continues this storied legacy, combining centuries of tradition with a forward-thinking commitment to the purity and precision of the Margaux appellation.

How is it made?

Spanning 65 hectares across Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, and Arsac, the vineyards of Château Durfort-Vivens are a masterclass in ecological harmony. Under Gonzague Lurton’s leadership, the estate became the first Margaux Grand Cru Classé to achieve dual Organic and Biodynamic certifications. The vineyard sits on deep gravel terraces with a complex mosaic of soil types, which are managed through agroecology and agroforestry to foster vibrant biodiversity. By utilizing phytotherapy, compost, and specific cover crops, the estate has regenerated its living soils. This meticulous approach extends to the cellar, where the 2021 vintage—a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot—was aged for 18 months in a combination of 70% new oak barrels and 30% TAVA amphorae to preserve the wine's natural brilliance.

What does it taste like?

The Château Durfort-Vivens 2021 is a fascinating expression of the terroir, lauded by critics for its remarkable balance and aromatic clarity. On the nose, it surprises with fresh, spring floral hints rather than heavy summer fruits, offering a bright and sophisticated profile. Its structure is reminiscent of the classic 1986 vintage, boasting a firm and elegant tannic backbone, while possessing a creative "fantasy" and charm akin to the 1988. This wine is built for longevity and grace; it is best enjoyed from 2026 onwards, reaching its peak around 2033. For an optimal experience, serve at 16–18°C and allow one to two hours of decanting to let its complex layers fully unfurl.
