Who makes it?

The story of Château d'Yquem began in December 1593 when Jacques de Sauvage acquired the "House of Yquem" from the French monarchy. Over the centuries, the estate became synonymous with the legendary Lur-Saluces family, following the 1785 marriage of Françoise-Joséphine de Sauvage d'Yquem to Count Louis-Amédée de Lur-Saluces. Even Thomas Jefferson, a known oenophile, proclaimed it the "best white wine of France" after visiting the château in the late 18th century. Today, under the stewardship of LVMH, the estate continues to honor its heritage, maintaining the rigorous standards that have led to historic milestones, such as the record-breaking $1.5 million sale of a 135-year vertical collection.

How is it made?

Nestled in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the vineyard spans 126 hectares of prime terroir, though production is strictly limited to ensure excellence. The estate is planted with 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, but it is the meticulous harvesting process that truly defines the wine. Harvesters perform an average of six "tries" (passes) through the vineyard to select only the grapes perfectly affected by Botrytis cinerea, or "noble rot." This dedication to quality is so absolute that in poor vintages—occurring nine times in the 20th century and notably in 2012—the château refuses to release a wine under its own name. The resulting nectar is aged for three years in new oak barrels, producing a wine of unmatched concentration and longevity.

What does it taste like?

While famous for its sweet wines, the 2023 "Y" (Ygrec) offers a rare and sophisticated dry expression of the Yquem terroir. This "gourmet" dry white wine is a balanced blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Sémillon, characterized by a vibrant, "salt-encrusted" mineral acidity and a soft oiliness on the palate. The nose opens with fresh aromas of white grapefruit, white peach, and almond blossom, followed by hints of mandarin skin and fennel. With a subtle 5-6g/l of residual sugar and a structured 13.5% ABV, this vintage presents a sharp, invigorating kick that expands into layers of complexity. It is an exclusive, low-yield release with less than 1,000 cases produced, estimated to drink beautifully between 2025 and 2035.
