Who makes it?

Château Gloria is a rare entrepreneurial triumph that tells the story of one man’s lifelong devotion to the Saint-Julien appellation. Born in 1903 into a family with three centuries of viticultural heritage, Henri Martin was a true child of the village who dreamed of creating his own estate from the ground up. Starting in the late 1930s with just a single hectare of land, he spent his lifetime meticulously acquiring exceptional parcels to build a splendid legacy. Despite not being born into wealth, Henri’s charm and deep understanding of the Bordeaux wine trade allowed him to become a legendary ambassador for the region. Today, the estate radiates the joyful energy and ambition of its founder, who famously and mischievously toasted to Gloria as "the most classified estate in Saint-Julien."

How is it made?

The soul of Château Gloria lies in its unique vineyard composition, which spans 50 hectares of deep, gently-sloping gravel. Henri Martin strategically assembled this estate by purchasing prime plots primarily from revered 1855 Classified Growths, ensuring a level of quality that rivals the most prestigious names in the Médoc. He often referred to the terroir of Saint-Julien as "béni des dieux" (blessed by the gods), a sentiment reflected in the meticulous care given to the vines. The production process at the estate honors the artisanal traditions Henri inherited from his father, a humble cooper. This blend of creativity, attention to detail, and world-class soil allows Château Gloria to produce wines that perfectly capture the elegance and structure of the Saint-Julien appellation.

What does it taste like?

The 2019 Château Gloria is a standout vintage, characterized by a compelling and beautifully delineated nose of ripe black fruit, crushed rocks, and tobacco. Subtle marine scents add a layer of complexity to what is perhaps one of the most precise aromatics found in Saint-Julien this year. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and remarkably lively, offering a sophisticated profile where a touch of soy infuses the rich black fruit. It is a fine-boned and elegant expression with wonderful sapidity on the finish and extraordinary length. This is a serious, well-structured wine that demonstrates the "miraculous" quality the estate is known for, making it a must-have for collectors of fine Bordeaux wine.
