Who makes it?

The history of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a captivating tale of a "sleeping beauty" restored to its former glory. While the first structures on the "Grand-Puy" domain date back to 1737, it was under Pierre-Frédéric Lacoste in 1855—the year of the famous Médoc classification—that the Château assumed its elegant, Renaissance-inspired architecture. After decades of decline during the early 20th century, the estate entered a vibrant new era in 1978 when François-Xavier and Marie-Hélène Borie took up residence. Today, the Borie family serves as the dedicated guardians of this Pauillac treasure, blending a storied past with a lively, modern hospitality that welcomes wine enthusiasts from across the globe.

How is it made?

Located in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyard of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is situated on a unique "puy" or hill, rising twenty meters above sea level. This remarkable terroir consists of deep, coarse gravel deposits from the Quaternary period, which provide natural drainage and radiate heat to ensure the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes reach perfect maturity. The estate manages ninety hectares of land, with sixty hectares of vines planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare to encourage deep root growth. Under the watchful eye of the Borie family, the winemaking process is defined by "precision," from the hand-picking of the harvest to a long maceration and aging for up to 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new for each vintage.

What does it taste like?

The Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2019 is a magnificent expression of the estate’s signature style, boasting a blend dominated by 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot. In the glass, it reveals an intense, bright purple hue that hints at its depth and vitality. The nose is an explosion of powerful black fruits, most notably the bigarreau cherry, complemented by sophisticated undertones of spice and refreshing menthol. On the palate, the wine is dense and complex, offering a precise attack and a beautifully balanced mid-palate. Its structure is defined by tannins that masterfully combine power with elegance, leading to a long, aromatic finish. This vintage stands as a splendid success for the property, capturing all the richness and complexity of a classic Pauillac.
