Who makes it?

Château Haut-Brion holds the prestigious title of the oldest winegrowing estate in the Bordeaux region, with a legacy of excellence that stretches back centuries. While the unique virtues of its gravelly soils were first discovered nearly 2,000 years ago, the estate’s history was officially recorded as early as 1521. Its modern era of brilliance began in 1935 when American financier Clarence Dillon purchased the property, dedicated to restoring it to the elite circle of the world’s most legendary wines. Today, that courageous vision is carried forward by the fourth generation of the family, led by Prince Robert of Luxembourg. Under his guidance, the estate continues to blend historic tradition with a forward-thinking approach to luxury winemaking.

How is it made?

Located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Haut-Brion is the only wine in history to be dual-classified as both a First Growth from the 1855 classification and a Classified Growth of the Graves. The vineyard’s secret lies in its remarkable "gravels"—small quartz pebbles deposited over millennia—which sit atop a complex subsoil of clay, sand, and limestone. These mounds provide natural drainage and an ideal orientation for the vines. In harmony with this exceptional terroir, the estate practices gentle, sustainable viticulture. By eliminating insecticides and preserving four hectares of wooded parkland, the property serves as a vital biodiversity reservoir, providing a sanctuary for dozens of protected bird species and rare insects like the Great Capricorn beetle.

What does it taste like?

The 2014 Château Haut-Brion is an elegant and complex red that beautifully captures the essence of a remarkable growing season. Following a challenging summer, an extraordinary Indian summer in September provided the warmth and sun needed for the grapes to reach a perfect level of ripeness. The result is a wine with a truly beautiful bouquet, featuring rich notes of blackberry and blackcurrant interlaced with sophisticated empyreumatic overtones and mineral aromas. On the palate, it reveals smooth, well-structured tannins that achieve a rare balance of power and refinement. The experience concludes with a surprisingly long, persistent finish, a hallmark of its noble origins and the unique terroir of Pessac.
