Who makes it?

The history of Château LaTour-Martillac is etched into the very stones of its estate, taking its name from the 12th-century fortified tower that still stands in the main courtyard. Originally built by the ancestors of the philosopher Montesquieu, the fort once held a strategic position guarding the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. In 1930, Alfred Kressmann acquired the property and renamed it to distinguish it from its Médoc namesake, beginning a legacy of excellence that spans generations. The estate’s prestige was solidified early on when its 1934 red vintage was selected for the coronation of King George VI in 1936. Today, it remains a prestigious Classified Growth of the Graves, standing as one of only six elite properties recognized for both its red and white wine production.

How is it made?

The 2021 white vintage marks an exciting new chapter for the estate, as it is the first overseen by Edouard Kressmann. The vineyard, which has grown to nearly 30 hectares under the dedicated stewardship of the Kressmann family, benefits from the unique gravel slopes of the Martillac plateau. The 2021 growing season demanded precision; a cool summer and a dry spring led to a patient harvest in September to ensure optimal ripeness. This vintage is a masterful blend of 57% Sauvignon Blanc and 43% Sémillon, combining the vibrant acidity of the Sauvignon with the structured, oily texture of the Sémillon. The result is a wine that reflects both the resilience of the terroir and the meticulous viticulture practiced at this historic Bordeaux estate.

What does it taste like?

On the palate, Château LaTour-Martillac 2021 Blanc is a brilliant expression of a classic Graves white. It presents a beautiful straw-yellow hue with crystalline highlights, opening with an aromatic bouquet of citrus, fresh pear, and pineapple, accented by delicate notes of jasmine and toasted almond. The entry is precise and taut, evolving into a balanced, unctuous body layered with tropical fruit flavors and a sophisticated hint of salinity. With a refreshing, high-energy finish, this wine is best enjoyed between 2024 and 2030. For the best tasting experience, serve slightly chilled at 10°C (50°F) while young, allowing it to warm toward 14°C (57°F) as it gains complexity with age.
