Who makes it?

The story of Château L’Évangile is rooted in the prestigious Pomerol region, where the Léglise family first began cultivating vines in the mid-18th century. Originally appearing on land registers in 1741 as Fazilleau, the estate was later rechristened "L’Évangile" at the turn of the 19th century. Recognized as a "Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol" as early as 1868, the estate flourished under the stewardship of the Paul Chaperon and the Ducasse family for over a century. In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite acquired the property, ensuring a continuity of care while ushering in a new era of innovation. Today, the estate continues to thrive as a B Corp certified winery, blending centuries of Bordeaux tradition with a forward-thinking commitment to sustainability and excellence.

How is it made?

Located in a privileged setting bordered by Château Pétrus and Cheval Blanc, the 22-hectare vineyard of Château L’Évangile sits upon a geological marvel: a long line of rare surface gravel layered over heavy green clay. This unique terroir provides the perfect foundation for Merlot and Cabernet Franc to reach their full potential. As a pioneer in the region, L’Évangile is the first of the Rothschild Lafite estates to fully embrace organic farming, treating the vineyard as a natural laboratory. From the introduction of beehives to encourage biodiversity to the use of horses in the vines, every step of production respects the raw material. In the winery, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled concrete vats before aging for 18 months in oak barrels crafted by the Tonnellerie des Domaines Barons de Rothschild, ensuring every bottle captures the true essence of the land.

What does it taste like?

The flagship Château L’Évangile is a wine of extraordinary depth, characterized by its intense color and shimmering garnet glints. On the nose, it reveals a sophisticated bouquet of elegant mocha and resinous Swiss pine, which evolves into complex notes of wild blueberries as it breathes. The palate is exceptionally smooth, featuring the "silky tannins" and refined structure that have made this estate a legend among experts. A masterful blend of power and gentleness, this wine offers a sharp yet balanced finish, promising an incredible evolution for those who choose to cellar it for decades to come. Whether enjoyed with a classic rib steak or savored on its own, it remains a definitive expression of the world’s finest Merlot-based blends.
