Who makes it?

The storied history of Château Lynch-Bages began in the 16th century within the "Batges" lands of Pauillac. By the 18th century, the estate gained international renown under the influence of the Irishman John Lynch and his son Thomas, who officially established the Domaine de Bages. The property remained in the Lynch family for 75 years, during which time Michel Lynch pioneered soil drainage and vineyard innovation. In the modern era, the Cazes family has shaped the estate's contemporary success. Since Jean-Charles Cazes acquired the property in 1934, four generations have dedicated themselves to the Médoc lifestyle, culminating in the 2020 vintage—the first produced in their state-of-the-art cellars designed by architect Chien Chung Pei.

How is it made?

The vineyard at Lynch-Bages is a testament to technical evolution and a deep understanding of the unique Pauillac terroir. In the late 19th century, the estate became a leader in the winemaking revolution by adopting the "two-storey vat room" system, which utilized gravity to handle grapes with unparalleled precision. This commitment to quality continues today through meticulous vineyard management and a sophisticated aging process. The wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, with 70% new wood, to ensure structural elegance. The 2020 blend is a masterful composition of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, reflecting a perfect balance of traditional craft and modern winemaking excellence.

What does it taste like?

On the palate, this vintage reveals itself as a classic, mature masterpiece. The nose offers an attractive interplay between deep, buttery black fruits, subtle cedar and graphite notes, and a refreshingly cool, minty Cabernet character. While the wine possesses a muscular personality and plenty of structure, it remains inviting with a beautiful fruit attack and an alluring purity. This tightly-packed Lynch-Bages features a nicely textured mouthfeel and concludes with a full-bodied finish characterized by a lingering, wrapping sweetness. It is a sophisticated choice for collectors and enthusiasts looking for the quintessential expression of a world-class Pauillac red.
