Who makes it?

Steeped in centuries of French history, Château Mauvesin Barton boasts a legacy dating back to 1457 when the estate was first acquired by Jean de Foix Grailly. Originally constructed as a medieval fortress complete with arrow slits and towers, the property has weathered centuries of change, including being seized during the French Revolution. In 1853, the Marquis Lodoïs Le Blanc de Mauvesin commissioned the elegant Louis XIII-style château that stands today, characterized by its stately pavilions and lush conifer gardens. A new chapter began in 2011 when the renowned Lilian Barton Sartorius and her children acquired the estate, merging their family's centuries of winemaking expertise with the historical "Mauvesin" name to create a modern Bordeaux powerhouse.

How is it made?

The sprawling 220-hectare estate features 55 hectares of prime vineyards that have undergone extensive renovation to reach their full potential. Under the technical direction of Mélanie Barton Sartorius, the estate employs a meticulous production process where younger vines are hand-picked to ensure fruit integrity. After a careful selection, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve their vibrant character. The wine then matures for 12 to 15 months in French oak barrels, a third of which are new. In a unique nod to traditional cellar management, these casks rest on a natural bed of gravel to perfectly regulate humidity, allowing the blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc to develop its sophisticated structure.

What does it taste like?

In the glass, the Château Mauvesin Barton reveals a stunning ruby color, leading into a complex nose of toasted hazelnut complemented by bright red fruits like cherry and blueberry. On the palate, this blend—composed of 54% Merlot, 39.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6.5% Cabernet Franc—displays remarkable balance and finesse. The tannins are delicate and well-integrated, building toward a fresh, almost minty finish that provides excellent length and drinkability. Highly decorated by international critics, this wine has earned an impressive 92/93 points from James Suckling and 90 points from Decanter, making it a standout selection for enthusiasts seeking a refined Bordeaux experience.
