Who makes it?

Founded by the visionary Gérard Bru, Château Puech-Haut has quietly transformed from the best-kept secret in the Languedoc into the undisputed rockstar of Southern French winemaking. Spanning 115 hectares across prime terroirs like Saint Drézéry and Pic Saint Loup, this estate sits right where the sun-drenched Mediterranean climate meets ancient clay and limestone soils topped with smooth galet pebbles. While some luxury French châteaux take themselves far too seriously, Puech-Haut focuses its energy on crafting deeply impressive, benchmark French Country wines that punch well above their weight class—proving that world-class winemaking doesn't require a snobbish attitude, just exceptional dirt and serious dedication.

How is it made?

The magic of the flagship Tête de Bélier Rouge begins just 20 kilometers northeast of Montpellier, where 100 hectares of Puech-Haut terroir sit at elevations between 50 and 150 meters. Here, ancient Rhône River pebbles rolled in during the Quaternary period soak up the maritime sun and radiate warmth back to low-yielding vines, restricted to a stingy 25 hectoliters per hectare to guarantee maximum flavor concentration. The blend reads like a masterclass in Southern Rhône-style power: 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 8% Mourvèdre, and 2% Carignan. Each grape variety receives its own VIP treatment, fermenting separately in concrete tanks for three to four weeks before undergoing 18 long months of traditional aging in wooden barrels and casks. Only at bottling are these distinct elements harmoniously blended into a single bottle of pure liquid luxury.

What does it taste like?

Pouring a mesmerizing deep garnet-black with vibrant violet hues, the Tête de Bélier Rouge practically demands your full attention before you even take a sip. On the nose, it erupts with intensely ripe black berries underscored by sophisticated, pronounced oak notes that whisper pure indulgence. Take a sip and you're met with an intense, generous palate bursting with layers of dark summer fruit, sweet baking spices, and a delightfully cheeky hint of toasted bread—all gliding effortlessly into an impeccably balanced finish. It is a full-throttle red wine that craves serious food partners: line up a sizzling rack of lamb, grilled red meats, or famously potent cheeses like Camembert and Munster, or embrace total indulgence by serving it alongside a fresh cherry clafoutis.
