Who makes it?

Established in 1985, Decoy is a winery known for producing wines from notable vineyard sources, including their own Ridgeline and Brownell estate vineyards in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County. The winemaking program at Decoy is overseen by Winemaker Dana Epperson. In 2020, Decoy introduced Decoy Limited, a selection of wines produced in limited quantities from distinguished wine regions across California.

How is it made?

This particular wine is composed entirely of Merlot grapes. The growing season experienced minimal winter rains and a mild spring, leading to drought conditions. Vineyard practices were adapted to ensure balanced crop loads. Budbreak occurred approximately two weeks earlier in their North Coast vineyards compared to the Central Coast. The harvest in the North Coast concluded on October 15th, while the Central Coast harvest finished on November 6th. The berries and clusters were smaller than average, resulting in lower yields but concentrated flavors, aromas, and textures. The wine was aged for 12 months in 100% French oak, with 40% new oak and 60% neutral oak.

What does it taste like?

Lush and expressive, offering aromas of black currant, black cherry, boysenberry, and sweet baking spices. On the palate, it presents a plush and polished texture with silky tannins. The flavor profile includes dark berry, creamy mocha, and bittersweet chocolate, leading to a long and supple finish. The overall quality of the resulting wines from this vintage is considered exceptional, characterized by good balance, natural acidity, and bright, juicy flavors.
