Product Profile
Established in 1985, Decoy is a winery known for producing wines from notable vineyard sources, including their own Ridgeline and Brownell estate vineyards located in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County. The winemaking operations at Decoy are overseen by the respected Winemaker Dana Epperson, who is recognised for her proficiency with various grape varieties across multiple regions. In 2020, Decoy expanded its offerings with the introduction of Decoy Limited, a selection of smaller-production wines crafted from distinctive lots sourced from California's premier wine regions.
Winemaking
This particular Zinfandel is a blend of 86% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, and 2% Carignane, all harvested in 2022 from various California appellations. The 2022 harvest commenced early with lower yields and warm weather in late July and early August. A significant heat event in early September necessitated careful monitoring and timely harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness. After minor late-September rains, the harvest concluded in late October. The wine underwent 11 months of aging in 100% French oak, with 40% new and 60% neutral barrels.
Tasting Note
This 2022 Zinfandel is characterized by inviting aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, mocha, and cinnamon spice. On the palate, it presents flavors of berry pie and juicy plum, supported by rich, supple tannins. Undercurrents of oak spice contribute to its depth and complexity, leading to a powerful, mouth-filling finish.
