Who makes it?

Grattamacco stands as a true pioneer of the Bolgheri appellation, representing a history of vision and grit. Founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, the estate transformed a rugged, "Wild West" landscape—once known for its tough sandstone and limestone—into one of Italy’s most prestigious wine destinations. As only the second entrepreneur to recognize the potential of this region, Meletti Cavallari helped define the Bolgheri DOC, even hosting the historic meeting of founding families under the estate's famous oak tree. Today, under the stewardship of Claudio Tipa, Grattamacco celebrates over forty vintages of excellence. This enduring legacy is marked by a steadfast commitment to an unconventional, artisanal style that continues to shape the global reputation of Tuscan fine wine.

How is it made?

The soul of Grattamacco lies in its unique terroir, where vineyards sit between 100 and 200 meters above sea level on a mosaic of sandy quartz, white clays, and marly limestone. This challenging terrain forces the vines—averaging 25 years in age—to dig deep, resulting in a spontaneous productive balance and naturally low yields. The winery is renowned for its environmentally respectful practices and innovative spirit, being the first in the area to utilize the alberello (bush-vines) training method for Cabernet Sauvignon. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a meticulous transformation; fermentation takes place in small open oak vats with gentle manual punching-down to extract only the most elegant tannins. The wine then matures for at least 18 months in French oak barriques, ensuring a sophisticated structure that honors its Mediterranean roots.

What does it taste like?

The Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore 2019 is a masterpiece of character and richness, showcasing a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 15% Sangiovese. This vintage benefited from a warm summer balanced by timely late-season rains, resulting in a wine of remarkable aromatic complexity and harmony. On the palate, it reveals a generous and enveloping nature, where deep fruit flavors are perfectly counterbalanced by a vibrant acid freshness and silky tannic structure. Its hallmark is a distinct saline minerality—a gift from the coastal flysch soils—leading into an extremely persistent, vertical finish. With its incredible balance and depth, the 2019 vintage is a prelude to magnificent longevity, making it a "must-have" for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
