Who makes it?

Castellare di Castellina stands as a beacon of Tuscan excellence, rooted in a philosophy that balances historical preservation with modern innovation. More than just a winery, the estate represents a holistic approach to agriculture, producing world-class olive oils and grappa alongside its renowned viticulture. The property is home to the beautifully restored Villa delle Upupe, a farmhouse that follows the conservation principles of critic Cesare Brandi—preserving the rustic soul of Chianti while offering refined, high-quality living. For decades, Castellare has been dedicated to showcasing the authentic spirit of the Sienese countryside, earning its place as a premier destination for those seeking a rare quality of rural life.

How is it made?

The crown jewel of the estate is the I Sodi di San Niccolò vineyard, a natural amphitheater with southwest exposure that facilitates optimal sun ripening. This "experimental" vineyard is the result of a prestigious collaboration with the Universities of Milan and Florence, focused on identifying the finest clones of Sangioveto and Malvasia Nera. The name "Sodi" reflects the "hard" or "stiff" soil characteristic of the region; this stony, low-organic terrain naturally limits yields but forces the vines to produce grapes of extraordinary concentration. With a soil mix rich in "skeleton" and excellent drainage, the vineyard produces fruit with an exceptionally high percentage of polyphenols, forming the foundation for a wine of global standing.

What does it taste like?

Regularly featured in the Wine Spectator Top 100 and decorated with Tre Bicchieri honors, this flagship blend is a profound expression of elegance and power. On the nose, the wine reveals a complex and concentrated bouquet, born from its unique soil composition and meticulous aging process. The palate is defined by its remarkable structure, offering a dense core of dark fruit balanced by sophisticated tannins and a vibrant acidity characteristic of the Sangioveto variety. It is a wine of incredible depth and longevity, consistently ranked among the world’s best for its ability to translate the rugged beauty of the Tuscan "Sodi" into a glass of pure, refined excellence.
