Who makes it?

Established in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a cornerstone of Burgundian winemaking, boasting over 140 years of family tradition. What began when 22-year-old Joseph Drouhin settled in the historic heart of Beaune has blossomed into one of the region's most prestigious estates, now spanning 100 hectares of elite "climat" sites. Through four generations—from the visionary Maurice, who acquired the legendary Clos des Mouches, to the modern leadership of the four Drouhin great-grandchildren—the House has remained a fierce protector of Burgundy’s diverse terroir. Today, the family continues to set the standard for "elegant perfection," blending deep-rooted heritage with a forward-thinking spirit that resonates with wine enthusiasts across the globe.

How is it made?

The Joseph Drouhin estate is defined by its commitment to the land, transitioning to organic and biodynamic farming under the guidance of Philippe Drouhin to preserve the delicate biodiversity of the region. This particular selection hails from the iconic Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Mouches, a sun-drenched vineyard enclosure named after the honeybees (or "honey flies") that once thrived there. Situated on a gentle east-facing slope with a complex mix of clay, limestone, and marl, the 2022 vintage benefited from the warmest and sunniest year on record. By prioritizing gentle pressing and aging on lees, the Drouhin family has captured the vibrant energy and mineral structure of this rocky soil, ensuring the 2022 harvest is both generous in yield and exceptional in quality.

What does it taste like?

This 2022 Clos des Mouches is an outstanding expression of Chardonnay, shimmering with a pale yellow hue and offering an intricate floral bouquet of white lilac and white rose. As the wine breathes, it reveals lush fruity aromas that evolve into sophisticated notes of grilled hazelnut and toasted almond. On the palate, the wine is remarkably lively, striking a masterful balance between a rich, silky texture and a firm mineral backbone. It possesses a harmonious fullness that never feels heavy, echoing the complexity of a Bâtard-Montrachet paired with the sheer power of a Corton-Charlemagne. While its immediate aromatic charm makes it delightful today, its substantial structure promises a beautiful evolution for those who choose to cellar it.
