Who makes it?

Founded in 1997, Kosta Browne has spent the last quarter-century cementing its reputation as one of North America’s most revered cult wineries. Famous for crafting some of the world's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this Sonoma County powerhouse has landed a coveted spot on Wine Spectator’s annual "Top 100 Wines" list seven times, even snatching the ultimate title of "Wine of the Year" in 2011. Under the watchful eye of acclaimed winemaker Julien Howsepian, Kosta Browne sources from the most fiercely competitive, cool-climate acreage across California. While their elite estate program boasts legendary vineyards like Cerise and Keefer, they have built an empire by partnering with the absolute best growers in the business—because when you're this obsessed with quality, you don't compromise.

How is it made?

The 2021 Kosta Browne Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir owes its existence to literal continental drift. Over 20 million years ago, tectonic plate movements forced local mountains to rise from the sea and rotate clockwise, forming a rare, purely East/West transverse range that acts as a giant vacuum for cool coastal fog and brutal Pacific winds. Grown in this unique marine-based silica soil across premier vineyards like Mt. Carmel, Rita's Crown, and Sanford & Benedict, these premium Pinot Noir grapes (spanning elite clones like 2A, Swan, and Pommard) were meticulously harvested over a three-week window. In the cellar, winemaker Julien Howsepian treated the fruit to a complex fermentation matrix—89% stainless steel, 10% concrete, and a touch of whole-cluster wood—before aging the wine for 15 luxurious months in a combination of 48% new French oak, wood casks, and new Austrian oak. It's a high-effort, low-intervention masterpiece that balances tech-nerd precision with pure, wild terroir.

What does it taste like?

On the nose, this 2021 vintage is an absolute show-stopper, greeting you with bright red fruit aromas layered alongside a delightfully earthy perfume of fresh pine, aromatic clove, and cinnamon stick—essentially a high-end ski chalet in a glass. The first sip reveals a beautifully soft, velvety texture on the palate that instantly pops with juicy cranberry, ripe cherry, and wild strawberry fruit notes. Understated, elegant tannins provide a sophisticated structure, while a subtle, vibrant whisper of citrus adds unexpected nuance to an incredibly smooth, extended finish. It is complex enough to make a sommelier weep, yet juicy enough to disappear before you even realize you've poured a second glass.
