Who makes it?

Experience the storied heritage of Bordeaux with the Château LaTour-Martillac Grapecap 1884, a wine rooted in history and architectural legacy. The estate draws its name from a 12th-century tower that once served as a strategic fort for the ancestors of the philosopher Montesquieu. In 1930, Alfred Kressmann acquired the property, renaming it to its current form to distinguish it from its Médoc namesake. Today, this Classified Growth of the Graves remains a family-run jewel, recognized as one of only six estates in the region honored for both its red and white wine production

How is it made?

The soul of this cuvée lies in the "Grapecap" plot, a name derived from the Latin gratum caput, or "precious vine." Planted in 1884, these are the oldest vines on the estate, providing a unique heirloom quality that the Kressmann family reserves only for exceptional white wine vintages. The 2021 vintage represents a significant milestone as the first under the stewardship of Edouard Kressmann. Despite a challenging growing season marked by a frosty spring and a cool summer, the grapes achieved uniform flowering and a late, precise harvest in mid-September. This meticulous approach in the vineyard ensures that the blend—composed primarily of 96% Sémillon—fully captures the complexity of the estate’s historic gravel slopes.

What does it taste like?

On the palate, the Château LaTour-Martillac Grapecap 1884 (2021) offers an exquisite and refined experience. While youthful and discreet upon opening, aeration unlocks sensual, powdery aromas of fresh verbena. The initial "juicy attack" gives way to a sophisticated profile of ripe yellow fruits, including apricot, complemented by delicate nuances of almond and lightly toasted hazelnut. Remarkable for its density and lingering length, this wine is a true expression of its ancient terroir. For the best experience, we recommend serving between 10°C and 12°C, with optimal tasting beginning in 2026.
