Who makes it?

If you ever find yourself needing to defend your wine collection from a medieval siege, the Sesti - Castello di Argiano estate is the place to be. Located at the southern tip of the Montalcino plateau, this stunning property centers around a UNESCO-protected 13th-century watchtower that used to communicate with neighboring fortresses via drum and fire. Fast forward to the mid-1970s, and the estate was completely reclaimed by nature until astronomer Giugi Sesti and his English wife Sarah lovingly rescued it from the overgrown wilderness. Today, their daughter Elisa Sesti spearheads the operation, crafting world-class wines with a quirky family heritage that somehow stretches all the way to a great-great-grandmother who was the mayor of Shrewsbury! True to Giugi’s passion, you will find stars on the labels, but the real magic is on the ground: only 9 of their 102 hectares are planted with vines, leaving the rest to wild woodlands and olive groves.

How is it made?

While Montalcino is famous for Sangiovese, the Castello Sesti IGT is a delicious, rule-breaking exception crafted from 100% Merlot. These grapes are pampered on the southern slopes of Montalcino at an altitude of 350 meters, digging their roots into ancient oceanic sediment. The estate acts as a self-sustaining eco-paradise, utilizing natural, time-honored practices with a total ban on harsh chemicals. A unique local micro-climate funnels gentle sea breezes through the surrounding forests, acting as a Mother Nature-approved air conditioning unit that keeps the fruit perfectly fresh. Following fermentation in stainless steel, this highly exclusive wine—with a tiny total production of just 1,330 bottles—was matured for 18 months in 500-liter tonneaux barrels and bottled without filtration to preserve its absolute purity.

What does it taste like?

Castello is an absolute showstopper, delivering a full-bodied Italian red wine that balances sheer power with sophisticated elegance. On the palate, it is beautifully structured, complex, and flawlessly well-balanced, showing off the plush, velvety texture that only a perfectly aged Tuscan Merlot can achieve. To fully unlock its layers of dark fruit and savory depth, make sure to pop it in a decanter before serving at an ideal temperature of 18°C. It is the ultimate dinner party companion, pairing magnificently with rich game, roasted meats, or a board of deeply flavored vintage cheeses.
