Who makes it?

The story of the Sesti family estate reads like an absolute cinematic masterpiece. Nestled at the southern end of the Montalcino plateau, the striking Castello di Argiano estate was once a medieval hilltop fortress featuring a 1200 AD watchtower used for drumming and fire-signals during Italy’s feuding years. Fast-forward to the mid-1970s, and the site was completely reclaimed by nature until astronomer Giugi Sesti and his English wife, Sarah, lovingly rescued it from the overgrowth. Today, their brilliant daughter Elisa Sesti steers the winemaking ship with spectacular results. Fun fact for UK wine lovers: Elisa’s great-great-grandmother was actually the mayor of Shrewsbury! This quirky blend of Italian noble terroir and British heritage makes every bottle uniquely captivating, with labels paying homage to Giugi's astronomical roots.

How is it made?

To craft the spectacular Sesti Rosso di Montalcino 2023, Elisa harnesses the pure power of 100% Sangiovese grapes grown on the estate’s premium southern slopes at an altitude of 350 meters. The vines thrive in ancient oceanic sediment, enjoying a microclimate where gentle sea breezes act as a natural air conditioning unit through the surrounding woodlands. True to their eco-friendly ethos, only nine of the estate's 102 hectares are planted with vines to maximize biodiversity. Following a rigorous hand-harvest, the winemaking team uses traditional methods to ferment the juice before letting it rest for 12 months in 30 HL medium-sized oak barrels (botte). By shunning small French barriques, Sesti allows the true, elegant personality of high-end Tuscan Sangiovese to shine through with minimal chemical intervention.

What does it taste like?

Pouring a rich, inviting hue, the Sesti Rosso di Montalcino 2023 is a tour de force of pure Tuscan elegance. Because this premium red wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve its maximum flavor profile, it highly benefits from being decanted prior to serving at a precise 18°C. On the nose, it bursts with vibrant red cherry, wild berries, and a subtle, earthy complexity reflecting its oceanic soil roots. The palate delivers a breathtaking combination of bright, juicy acidity, structured tannins, and a beautifully persistent finish that punches well above its "Rosso" weight class. It is an absolute dream when paired with rich pasta sauces, mature cheeses, or a classic Italian roasted meat feast.
