Who makes it?

Nestled in the rolling hills of Chianti, just a stone’s throw from Florence, lies the historic Villa Mangiacane estate. This remarkable property is anchored by the Palazzo Machiavelli, an aristocratic residence with roots stretching back to the late 14th century, alongside the elegant Villa Mazzei. Over the centuries, the estate has served as a sanctuary for nobles, artists, and intellectuals, weaving a rich tapestry of culture into its very foundations. Today, Villa Mangiacane remains a beacon of Italian heritage, blending its storied past with a commitment to producing world-class artisanal goods, from its prestigious wines to its signature spicy extra virgin olive oil.

How is it made?

The estate’s viticulture is centered in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, where 43 hectares are dedicated to the region's quintessential grape: Sangiovese. Situated at an altitude of 270 meters, the vines thrive in unique soil composed of weathered Chianti boulders and sand, characterized by a sub-acidic pH and an absence of limestone. As a member of the Chianti Classico Consortium, Villa Mangiacane employs meticulous production methods to ensure quality. This 100% Sangiovese wine undergoes a sophisticated aging process: 30% of the blend refines in new 500-liter French wooden tonneaux for 12 months, followed by four months in Tava amphora, while the remainder ages in second-passage tonneaux. The process concludes with a final nine months of bottle refinement to achieve perfect balance.

What does it taste like?

This wine presents a stunning medium dark ruby colour in the glass, inviting the senses into a complex aromatic bouquet. On the nose, it reveals layers of ripe cherry and violet, elegantly framed by toasted oak and sophisticated notes of chocolate, coffee, and tobacco. The palate is impressively ripe and round, offering a savory depth that speaks to its Tuscan terroir. Every sip leads to a long, slightly spicy finish, making it an ideal companion for hearty Italian cuisine or aged cheeses. With only 50,000 bottles produced annually, it stands as a refined expression of the San Casciano microclimate.
